Princess Eva-uck-cu-luck-cu-lick-a-lock
Once upon a time there was princess named Princess Eva-uck-cu-luck-cu-lick-a-lock. She was not the topical beautiful princess found in most fairy tales. She was ugly, actually ugly is too weak of a word to describe how horrid she looked. Her skin was covered with warts, moles, and pocks. Her eyes were very different in size and shape. Her mouth was warped and lips were swollen and malformed. Her nose was crooked and had a very large mole at the end of it, from the mole grew a long thick hair. Her back was twisted and curved and she walked with a limp. Her hair was many colors all of which were bad, consisting of off browns and dull greys.
Her outward appearance was in complete contrast to her inward beauty. However, few if anyone ever knew this about her. Her fearsome appearance caused people to hide when she approached or as loyal subjects they would bow to her and avoid directly looking at her.
The princess didn’t away look this way. When she was just a baby on the day of her naming a witch placed a curse on her and gave her the name Princess Eva-uck-cu-luck-cu-lick-a-lock. She was cursed because of the actions of her parents. Her mother the queen was cruel and vain. The queen wanted all of the things of beauty to be hers and forbade anyone in the kingdom from wearing fine clothes or jewellery. The people of the kingdom had to dress in rags while queen would stare at herself in the mirror wearing fine silks covered in gems and embroidered with gold.
The king was her equal in his abuse of his subjects. He was greedy and horded all of the kingdom’s treasure. He loved playing in the mountains of gold held in his vault. He also had a great love of food and made sure all of the finest foods were brought to the castle. He did not care that often his people would starve while he feasted. It was for all of these reasons that the witch placed a curse on the baby, so that they might learn to charge their ways and bring peace and balance back to the kingdom.
The queen and king however did not learn from this. The king and queen avoided their daughter and as years passed she grew up spending most of her time alone and reading the many books in the royal library. When she became old enough to leave the castle on her own she packed a small bag of food and clothing and simply walked away. She wore a long thick cloak to try to cover as much of her face and body as she could.
As she left the castle gates, people bowed to her. As she walked through the streets of the surrounding town, she saw how the people of the kingdom lived and tears came to her eyes. She vowed that she would not return until she found a way the right the wrongs of her parents.
As she was at the boundaries of her kingdom, she encountered a man who did not run from fear or bow in reverence. He was a blind man who rattled a tin cup begging for some money for food. The princess took from her pockets all of the money she carried and put it into his cup. This act of kindness caused a small change in the princess. On her cheek where there was once a large mole was now a small piece of silky smooth skin. She continued walking helping all who needed her help; each time brought small changes in her appearance.
As she went from town to town, village to village, the people she met would never be able to pronounce her name, so her name would change as well, getting shorter and shorter. It was Princess Eva-uck-cu-luck-cu-lick-a-lock, then Princess Eva-uck-cu-luck-cu-lick-a, then Princess Eva-uck-cu-luck-cu, and after having walked for a thousand days and having helped a thousand people each day it become Princess Eva. And after having helped a thousand people per day for a thousand days, people said she looked like an angel. Her skin was flawless and smooth. She stood tall and straight with long flowing shiny hair.
She decided it was time for her to return to her kingdom. When she met her parents once again they fell before her crying having realized the mistakes they made. Princess Eva taught them and all the people of her kingdom all she had learned about helping others. Finally the people were happy and the curse was lifted. They say that Princess Eva remained beautiful until the end of her years and that everyday she continued to help others.
The End
